What is Individual Therapy?

Ready to make a change? It's normal to feel uncertain about whether you're ready to face the fact something needs to change. Committing to change may involve change in multiple areas of your life.  Such changes may include modifying your daily habits, the way you think, how you interact with others, and how you deal with the problems in your life.

Our therapists are experienced and have training in many different areas. We can help you move away from feeling hopelessness and gain a sense of direction in life. Even if you've previously tried, believe in yourself, and believe change is possible with the right treatment plan and support.

How Does Individual Therapy Work?

Individual therapy encourages individuals to use or learn a variety of new skills related to the individual’s patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. For example, a therapist might work with an individual to increase one's ability to identify triggers, unhealthy thoughts, or behaviors related to anxiety and depression.

Therapists also inform the individuals about ways to reframe their thoughts and consider alternative perspectives. As a result, the individual counseling process, along with the therapist, guides the individual toward awareness and promotes healthy coping, healing, and genuine change.

What to Expect from an Individual Therapy Session

Individual therapy is useful for many types of mental health issues. For example, if a person experiences unusual amounts of stress, anger, grief, or conflict in their life, individual therapy may be a great benefit. A therapist will explore many different approaches and essential issues, including (but not limited to):

  • Feelings, thoughts, and emotions
  • Behavior patterns
  • Problem-solving
  • Coping skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Strengths and weaknesses
  • Meaning and purpose in life

Individual therapy may be short-term or long-term, depending on your needs. As such, it is hard to give an exact number of sessions or the frequency of appointments. This depends on the your situation, recommendations of the therapist, and your personal choice. Remember, you may always contact Counseling Alliance™ with any questions.

When Do I Need Individual Therapy?

Individual counseling is helpful for a variety of reasons. Many people believe they need to wait for a traumatic experience or an addiction to occur to warrant the need for individual therapy. However, that isn't 100% true either. For example, individual therapy can help with:

  • Increasing an individual's self-awareness
  • Encouraging self-exploration
  • Identifying boundaries
  • Enhancing communication skills and improving the use of healthy coping skills.

The benefits of individual therapy will lead to a shift in behavior for the individual, which often decreases symptoms of a person's mental health issues.

While therapists at Counseling Alliance® are fully licensed and trained to provide a wide range of services many of our therapists have advanced training in several areas. Our goal is to be one of the premier treatment centers in the Midwest for relationship issues, sex, love and porn addiction, and the treatment of trauma.
