Even before COVID-19, telehealth was emerging as an effective option for therapists and clients alike. Studies have demonstrated, and consumers have reported, telehealth can be as effective as in-person sessions. Please read more to learn about the ease and effectiveness of telehealth.

PREPARING FOR TELETHERAPY

Counseling Alliance LLC primarily uses Zoom to facilitate Teletherapy sessions. Zoom is a HIPPA compliant and robust remote platform that allows for most therapy models to be effectively utilized, including EMDR.

System Requirements

Zoom works on most computers, smartphones, and tablets. You will need to download and install Zoom on all devices you plan to use for telehealth. For mobile devices you can go to the App Store, or Google Play. For your computer you will need to search for the appropriate software depending upon whether you have a PC or a Mac. In all cases Zoom is free to download and use.

Preparing for Session

We understand, especially during these days of COVID-19, that some settings maybe be less private than desirable. We take your privacy into consideration when you schedule your session. You will need a place that is quiet and private. With children or partners home from school and work privacy may be more difficult.  In such cases, consider options such as calling from your car or other private place when feasible.

The use of headphones or earbuds with a microphone can enhance your telehealth experience and help ensure privacy but are not essential. They are however more private.

Some Things That are Unique to Telehealth

Your therapist will need to ask you some questions that are not typically asked in therapy sessions.  Please "go with the flow" as these questions help ensure your safety and demonstrate your therapist is being ethically responsible. Questions are likely to include:

  • Where are you located? (especially important if you are anywhere other than your home)
  • Are you alone?
  • What is a good phone number to reach you if we are disconnected?
  • What is an emergency number in the unlikely case of a medical emergency?

Other questions may be necessary under certain circumstances.
